Orhan Burak Acar
Born in Ankara/Turkiye in 1990, Orhan Burak Acar graduated from Anadolu University, Department of Radio and Television Program Production. Worked as a set photographer, art production assistant, camera production assistant, production assistant in movie and tv series sets in years between 2010-2019 and made commercial projects(video, photography, design) for various companies. Worked as a promotional director in years 2019-2022. His first novel published in 2020 by the name Ucube-Karanlık Denge. Also took part as a preselection jury on Short Film Contests in those years. He tutored in Screenwriting workshops. Made a short film named Egaliter in 2023. Interested in visual psychology, surrealist art and mythology.
Member of Short Film Directors Association in Turkiye.
Carrying on his work within the scope of OBA Pictures which founded by him and continuing his

What is the story behind your film?
(Filminizin ardındaki hikaye nedir?)
Egalitarianism... It argues that every living thing in nature should have equal rights.
However, while defending this, it does not interfere with hierarchical balance. It does not interfere with whether a person is vegan, vegetarian or carnivorous, just as a lion hunts an antelope for food. Respects hierarchical balance. The fact that all living things live in harmony with each other ensures that this balance proceeds smoothly. People who advocate this idea are called "Egaliter" or "Egaliteryan".
This idea is at the basis of the birth of the idea of the equalitarian short film.
(Egaliteryanizm... Doğada her canlının eşit haklara sahip olması gerektiğini savunur.
Ancak bunu savunurken hiyerarşik dengeye karışmaz. Bir aslanın beslenmek için bir antilop avlaması gibi bir insanın vegan vejetaryan ya da etçil olmasına karışmaz. Hiyerarşik dengeye saygı duyar. Tüm canlıların birbiriyle bir bütün içinde yaşaması, bu dengenin sorunsuz bir şekilde ilerlemesini sağlar. Bu düşünceyi savunan kişilere ‘’Egaliter’’ ya da ‘’ Egaliteryan’’ denir.

What should people take away, gain, realize after watching your film?
(İnsanlar sizin filminizi izledikten sonra neyi almalı, kazanmalı, farkına varmalı?)
An universe which has humans along with nature and other living beings is a liveable universe. Humans way of life in modern day is not letting nature and other life forms to survive. While the movie emphasizes the extinction caused by this way of life it is also tells us that there is still a chance to change. Living in harmony with all life forms that are a part of universe's existence is human's only chance.
This is the social message the film shares while it enables the audience to make their own inferences by leaving the door open with imaginative messages.
İnsanlarla birlikte Doğa ve diğer canlıların yer aldığı bir evren yaşanılabilirdir. İnsanların günümüzdeki yaşam şekli doğanın ve diğer yaşam formlarının hayatını sürdürebilmesine izin vermiyor. Film böyle bir yaşam şeklinin sonucundaki tükenişe vurgu yaparken, değişmek ve değiştirmek için hala bir şansın olduğunu anlatıyor. Evrendeki varoluşun bir parçası olan tüm yaşam formları ile birlikte bir denge içinde yaşamak insanların tek şansı.
Filmin anlatmak istediği toplumsal mesaj bu iken; film kendi içinde imgesel mesajları ile izleyiciye açık kapı bırakarak kendi çıkarımlarını yapma imkanı veriyor.
What creation style did you use in the production of your project? What cameraman elements did you use?

We shoot some of the scenes in 16:9 4k using greenbox studio. And with my 3B team we did the modelling and animation parts in accordance to this concept. The important thing was keeping the reality level between humans and the fantasy race iyes as distinct as possible without standing out too much. We pondered about it a lot with my cinematographer Hakkı Kaplan.
I thought photographical stops and robotic movements of animated characters will be suitable for sending the intended message.
Filmin sahnelerinin bir bölümünü greenbox stüdyosunda 16:9 4k standardında çektik. Aynı şekilde 3B ekibim ile birlikte, modelleme ve animasyon kısmını bu konsepte uygun olarak hazırladık. Bizim için önemli olan filmdeki insan karakterler ile fantastik bir ırk olan iyeler arasındaki gerçeklik boyutunu göze batmadan olabildiğince ayrı tutmaktı. Görüntü yönetmenim Hakkı Kaplan ile birlikte bunun üzerine fazlasıyla kafa yorduk.
Fotografik duraklamaların ve animasyon karakterlerin robotik davranışlarının istenilen mesajı uygun aktaracağını düşünerek hareket ettim.
How did you select the actors for your project?
(Projenizin oyuncularını nasıl seçtiniz?)
Can Abat (Fatih Uyar) is a calm character who doesn't show his emotions. That's why I chose a model who is used to movie sets
Derbent (İbrahim Aslan) is a character who has inner turmoils so the actor had to be someone that can express different emotions at the same time. Therefore I chose İbrahim Aslan, who played these kinds of movies before and whose acting I like.
Can Abat (Fatih Uyar), durgun ve duygularını göstermeyen bir karakter. Bu nedenle film setlerine aşina bir model kullanmayı tercih ettim.
Derbent (İbrahim Aslan) ise içsel karışıklığı olan bir karakter olduğu için aynı anda farklı duygulara girebilecek bir oyuncu olmalıydı. Bu nedenle daha önce bu tip filmlerde oynamış ve oyunculuğunu beğendiğim İbrahim Aslan’ı seçtim.
Why do you think your film should appeal to distributors?
(Filminizin neden dağıtımcıların ilgisini çekmesi gerektiğini düşünüyorsunuz?)
Modern cinema is very effective upon audience. Short film Egaliter with it's unique structure and fiction has the features that can attract audience. This film which won awards is the proof that art films will be succesful in box office cinemas. "Egaliter" and other full length projects in psychological concepts which I'm working on will attract audiences attention.
Modern sinema izleyici üzerinde oldukça etkilidir. Egaliter kısa filmi farklı yapısı ve kurgusuyla izleyicilerin ilgisini çekebilecek özelliklere sahiptir. Birçok ödül almış olan bu film sanat filmlerinin gişe sinemasında başarı elde edeceğinin kanıtıdır. ‘’ Egaliter’’ ve diğer hazırlamakta olduğum uzun metraj psikolojik konseptteki projeler izleyici açısından dikkat çekici olacaktır.
At which festival has your film been screened?

Egaliter short film, completed in September 2023, has received many awards from festivals as of October 10, 2023. Best Director, Best Fantasy Short Film, Best Concept, Best Film Noir are some of them. The film's festival journey continues.
Eylül 2023'te tamamlanan Egaliter kısa filmi, 10 Ekim 2023 itibarıyla festivallerden birçok ödül almıştır. En İyi Yönetmen, En İyi Fantastik Kısa Film, En İyi Konsept, En İyi Kara Film bunlardan bazılarıdır. Filmin festival yolculuğu devam ediyor.
Which movies are your favorites and why?

I like the movies which characters goes through a psychological process like 12 Angry Men, The Seventh Seal and Taxi Driver.

What topics do you like to address in your stories?

In the cycle of "The Hero with A Thousand Faces", when characters have a purpose and never give up while they go through psychological and physiological processes is the foundation of my projects. The topic might be social, psychological, philosophical or a mixture of these. I like using these topics in a surrealist approach because it captures people's imagination.
‘’Kahramanın sonsuz yolculuğu’’ döngüsünde karakterlerin, belli bir amaç içerisine girdiğinde hangi psikolojik ve fizyolojik süreçlerden geçerse geçsin, asla pes etmiyor oluşu projelerimin temelinin oluşturur. Bu toplumsal, psikolojik, felsefik bir konu ya da konuların birleşiminden oluşabilir. Tüm bu konuları, insan zihninde hayalleri tetikleyebildiği için sürrealist bir yaklaşım ile ele almayı severim.
What is your motivation in making films?

I like the use of narrative and elements in Steven Spielberg, Christopher Edward Nolan, Wong Kar-wai and Krzysztof Kieślowski movies.

What projects do you plan to shoot in the future?

After the festival duration of the short film Egaliter I will continue working on my short and long length projects. I will also consider producers' project offers fitting in my style.
